Mark the fireplace face for the bottom edge of the
mantel top (Point A). This should be the same as the "B"
dimension from
the hearth. |
| Step
3 |
Measure another 10" up from (Point A) and mark
for the top edge of the hanger strip. Draw a line using a level to ensure a
proper installation of the hanger strip. Attach the hanger strip using
screws placed into studs if possible. Place mantel onto hanger strip. |

MODIFICATION
INSTRUCTIONS FOR "C" DIMENSION
The "C" dimension is the
space identified by the thickness of the tile that is mounted on your wall.
All Royal Mantels are cut for a standard 3/8" tile. If other
thicknesses of tile are used, you will have to make the following
modifications to have your mantel fit flush to the wall. Otherwise
skip to the next step.
|
| Step 4-A |
Measure the thickness of your tile from the
wall. |
| Step 4-B
|
Subtract 3/8" from the
measurement obtained in Step 4A. |
| Step 4-C
|
Place the mantel legs on a piece
of the cardboard box provided. Lay the legs on their side, with the
widest part on the floor. Mark the leg for the full length, with the
dimension obtained in Step 4B. Use a fine finishing saw, jigsaw or
sander to remove the material up to this line. |
| Step 4-D
|
Place your mantel top upside
down with the back facing you and mark a line established in Step 4B
on the bottom of the mantel top. **NOTE: Do not take the cut past the
outside location of the legs.** Use a fine finishing
saw, jigsaw or sander to remove the material up to this line. For most
applications, a belt sander is recommended. |
| Step
5 |
Measure the distance from the underside of the
mantel to the hearth surface. Cut the leg to fit this measurement keeping in
mind to include the base. Cut only the bottom of the leg. |
|
ADJUSTING
PROCEDURE FOR ROYAL MANTELS
Because of variation in wall
construction, you may want to "scribe" your mantel to fit your
wall like a glove.
This is not a difficult process.
Most handy men and finishing carpenters will be familiar with this
process. For the novice, a few tools and the following instructions will
provide you with a finished product you will be proud of.
If your mantel does not need any
adjusting, skip to the next step.
|
| Step 6-A |
Place your mantel in the proposed finished
location. Should you notice gaps between your mantel and the wall,
both the outside perimeter and the inside next to your fireplace
will have to have this process done to them. At the point with the
widest gap,
take your compass and open it so one tip touches the wall and the
other tip touches the mantel. If you have a locking device on your
compass, tighten it up so the same distance will be maintained. |
| Step 6-B |
Hold your compass parallel to the wall and
trace around the complete outside perimeter of the mantel. Push
firmly enough to leave a mark in your mantel. |
| Step 6-C |
Following this process for the inside of the
legs and the bottom of the mantel surrounding the fireplace (use the
same width that you used to scribe the outside), scribe a mark all
the way around the interior of your mantel. |
| Step 6-D |
It is important that you scribe both the
outside and the inside all the way around before you begin to remove
any material. |
| Step 6-E |
Remove your mantel from the wall and lay it
face down on the floor. |
| Step 6-F |
Take your belt sander and sand off material
down to your scribe mark, both on the inside and the outside of your
mantel. |
| Step 6-G |
When using a belt sander, sand with the
rotation of the belt towards the unfinished side of the wood or you
may cause chipping to your finish. |
|
FINISHING
INSTRUCTIONS
If you ordered your mantel
unfinished, follow these steps to apply a finish. Otherwise skip to
the next step.
|
|
PAINT GRADE |
| Step 7-A |
Check your mantel components for small voids or scratches.
where necessary, use a latex filler and allow to set. |
| Step 7-B |
Use a 300 grit sandpaper and lightly sand the mantel. Apply
a coat of latex paint and allow to dry. |
| Step 7-C |
Sand lightly again and apply a second coat of paint. |
|
STAIN &
CLEAR COAT |
| Step 7-A |
Check your mantel components for small voids or scratches. Where
necessary, use a suitable filler. |
| Step 7-B |
Lightly sand with 300 grit sandpaper and make sure all excess
filler is removed. |
| Step 7-C |
Apply a quality stain of your choice following the manufacturer's
instructions. |
| Step 7-D |
Apply clear coat and allow to dry. Sand lightly and
apply second coat. |
|
Sealing Your
Mantel with A Clear Coat Is Very Important. This Coat Will Protect
Your Mantel From Warping And Cracking. |
| Step
8 |
Position the legs in the
desired position and mark the locations where the legs will attach to the
Mantel. Remove the mantel top (place, top down, on the floor protect the
mantel by placing onto carpet or other non-abrasive material). Place the
legs on the marks and attach with the screws supplied in the package |
| Step
9 |
Place the mantel, with the
legs attached, back onto the hanger strip. Apply silicone to the base
components and put into position. Use weights or braces to keep legs in
place till silicone sets up. |
